In 2020, we got to know Mirela Marcu through our colleague Karine; any animal that is injured or needs other help, she takes them off the streets to then find a home for them.
Mirela’s main goal is TNR, which is why our ambassador Piet Hellemans helps her every year by going to Calarasi with a team of veterinarians and sterilizing as many dogs and cats as possible in a week.
Mirela: “Everything started in 2011 when I adopted Happy. I lived in Bucharest for 14 years and I was involved in working with orphans and social projects for unfortunate children and old people in the countryside.
I studied theology at university and then a master’s degree in social policy
When I went to visit my parents with my adopted dog Happy, I saw a lot of animals in need, I thought it was terrible to see and not be able to do anything. Then I moved back to Calarasi in 2012 because I had adopted two more dogs after Happy and I could no longer stay in Bucharest. I was overwhelmed because there was too much animal suffering and I didn’t have much power to help. I didn’t know anyone in the rescue world and it hurt to see starving dogs around and not be able to help them. One day I started looking on social media for Romanian people rescuing animals because I didn’t know how to start because the government doesn’t help in this area.
No one knew me, no one knew if I was serious and honest, and it was hard to prove because I had no one to recommend me.
But one day a rescuer responded to my message and I cannot explain how incredibly happy I was when they helped with a few bags of food for a mother with babies in my village.”
Since then Mirela has accomplished so much, she rescues dogs, cats, rabbits and even sheep and horses.
She has a big heart but just as importantly a lot of knowledge how to treat animals.
Many people and even the mayor of Calarasi are so grateful for her work as the number of stray animals is getting lower and lower!
